Who the hell was causing trouble now?
Cary scanned the restaurant, hoping this was a simple, easy to handle issueâsomeone about to throw a glass of wine on their date, that sort of thing. Hoping in vain because her Protector senses wouldnât have perked up at something so harmless.
When she didnât see anything, she stood. âSorry,â she said to Deacon without looking at him. And headed toward the back of the restaurant, her instincts driving her to the kitchen.
She paused at the swinging silver door, peeked through the rounded window into the kitchen, spotted the small man with a large gun, and rushed inside.
Since the gun was pointing toward a cluster of people, she put herself between the cluster and the gun. And because she did something that most people didnât doânamely move in front of a gun instead of trying to run away from itâthe gunman took several long moments to blink at her.
When he finally realized he had one more, unexpected, hostage, he snarled. âWho the hell are you?â
âOh, just a happy customer,â she said. âAnd you would be?â
âThe guy with the gun,â he said.
âYeah. Noticed. Why?â
âHe thought he could fire me. Me! I made this place. Heâs taking credit for my food.â
Okay. So disgruntled employee. She assumed one of the people in the cluster must be the head chef.
âYouâre little better than a dishwater, Philip,â a man said over Caryâs shoulder. âDonât you dare try to take credit for my creations.â
Oh boy. âUhm,â she said, turning slightly to address the chef. âBetter not to aggravate the guy with the gun until after he no longer has a gun. Okay?â
âI donât know who you are, lady,â the disgruntled employee said, âbut you got a death wish, Iâm happy to oblige.â
âWait,â she said as he lifted the gun and fingered the trigger. He actually paused, which kind of surprised her. âHuh. I didnât expect you to actually wait.â She shook her head. âAnywayâ¦â
âShut up.â
âSo much for waiting.â
âYou stepped in where you donât belong. Iâm not to blame for your death. You are.â
She sighed. She really really hated it when the bad guys didnât take responsibility for their actions. âIâm not the one pulling any triggers,â she said, annoyed now. âYouâre the one with the gun, holding people hostage, looking to kill. Donât blame other people for your problems, you asshole. All this and everything that follows is on you.â
She didnât see Deacon at the door, but she caught movement from the corner of her eye. And she was sure he was there somewhere. When she had to protect someone, and he happened to be around, he got involved. He just couldnât seem to help himself.
Since she couldnât actually do anything about the gunman except stand here and keep him from killing anyone, she did her part. She stood there, arms crossed. And when the sharp retort of the gun sounded, she continued to stand there as the people behind her screamed.
She hated guns.
The hail of bullets made her frown. There were an awful lot of them for a single gun.
